Gunshots Fired At Popular Suffolk County Park Forces Lockdowns

A shooting in a Long Island park sent area schools and town hall into lockdown.

The incident took place around 9:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 1, at Heckscher Park in Huntington.

Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are investigating said during the incident, shots were fired into a golf cart at the park by a passing vehicle.

No one was injured and the vehicle fled the scene.

Minutes after the shooting area schools and the Huntington Town Hall, the Village Green, and the senior center on Park Avenue, went into lockdown.

School District Superintendent Jim Polansky said in a recorded message directing parents and students not to come to school.

"The police are currently pursuing," Polansky said. "As a precaution, all Huntington schools will be placed into lockout, meaning there will be no entry or exit into the schools until cleared by SCPD. Please do not report to the schools. Further information will be shared upon receipt."

All of the lockdowns were lifted shortly after noon although officials are warning residents to avoid the park.

The incident is under investigation. Police said no arrests have been made.
